8 Things You Must Know To Build A Great Website
Last week we talked about how a bad website can do your business more harm than good. That column brought several emails asking what is the key to building an effective business website. I replied with the same answer I always give: building an effective business website is a simple matter of definition.
Before the first graphic is drawn or the first line of code is written, you must define the website’s budget, purpose, target audience, design, navigation, and content. And when that’s all said and done you must define the marketing that will bring visitors to your site.
It sounds easy, but you’d be amazed at how many really bad business websites there are out there. Yours might even be one of them. If so, listen up. For nearly ten years now my company has been building and rebuilding websites for every kind of business you can imagine: from mom-and-pops to multinationals. We’ve designed (or redesigned) a couple hundred websites and along the way I have come to the conclusion that most business websites do a pitiful job of working for their owners.
What’s that, you didn’t know your business website should work for you? You think it should just sit on a server somewhere taking up digital space and collecting digital dust?
Wrong. Every website, business or otherwise, must serve a purpose, and that’s usually where most websites fall short. They serve no purpose because the website owner … Read More
4 Things Everyone Ought To Know About Promotional Products
The unique power of promotional products is the ability to place targeted marketing messages in front of people during their everyday lives in a manner which produces less waste than traditional marketing methods but keeps the messages top of mind with prospects.
A broad definition of a promotional item is as follows: any useful item which contains branding (like a logo, marketing message or contact information). The meanings of ‘useful’ and ‘branding’ have been stretched and expanded over the years, but the idea remains relatively simple.
For example, Google typically gives out tech-y items which are not necessarily related directly to their business. Some examples include: a mini-fridge, a lava-lamp, or a digital picture frame. These items are intended less for direct-response generation and more to enforce their brand as a chic, retro-cool organization.
There are four attributes that your promotional products must possess to be successful:
Your promotional gifts must have four specific attributes to be successful:
1. They must feature an effective marketing message:
The call to action is one of the most overlooked attributes of a promotional product.
2. Audiences must be carefully selected for targeting and qualification:
Businesses just can’t afford to market to everyone. The goal is to get your promotional gifts into the hands of trusted and prominent industry personas.
3. Promotional items must be audience-appropriate:
The best-case scenario of a mismatched product is no response, and the worst is negative PR! Imagine sending a … Read More
Mobile Marketing – Marketing Options for Small Businesses
Mobile marketing is a way for business owners to market their company’s products or services through their customers’ mobile or smart phones. This can be done through sending SMS/MMS, downloading of the company mobile applications, and transforming the company website into a website that can be browsed on a mobile browser. These terminologies and concepts may sound intimidating, expensive, or even technical, but it shouldn’t scare small business owners. By now small business owners should accept the fact that more and more of their customers are going over to the digital side and relying on their smart phones to help them with their daily personal and business tasks.
Mobile marketing provides business owners a chance to reach out to their customers on a local or global scale, depending on their industry. However, mobile marketing is more geared towards improving local brand presence and scale, so how will small businesses make use of a mobile marketing?
– SMS and MMS are two common features of any mobile or smartphone. SMS is the transmission of texts via a wireless network, while MMS is a transmission of both text and media via a wireless network. Ideally, small businesses can reach out to their customers by sending SMS or MMS texts. These messages would range from product release dates, schedules of sales and discounts, and other important matters. This is considered a very effective mobile marketing option because 90% of all SMS or MMS messages are … Read More
Tips To Help You Succeed With Mobile Marketing!
There are a lot of interesting marketing methods in existence. One unique method that is possible thanks to modern technology is mobile marketing. Mobile marketing allows businesses to advertise their products on mobile devices, such as cell phones. If you would like to use high-tech mobile marketing, then read the information in this article.
Do not spend unreasonable amounts of text messages to personal phones. Mobiles are very personal and many people do not appreciate being overwhelmed with marketing messages. Try to limit the number of messages to as few as possible so as to maintain a high level of satisfaction with your customer.
Make sure your mobile marketing has a clear path to unsubscribing. There are legal ramifications to not having an apparent opt-out on every single piece of mobile and digital marketing, so develop your opt-out system at the same time that you are developing your subscription system. Each system handles this differently, but opt-outs can be done by clicking a hyperlink or by texting a word like ‘unsubscribe’ to a mobile short code.
If you are deciding to go down a path of mobile marketing for your company, you must make sure that it will work for you. It will work for most businesses as long as you have something to pitch at your customers through the text or call, this way the person will have a reason to come in and buy from you.

Giveaways by Website Draw in Consumers
Toy surprises buried in cereal boxes or in bags of popular snacks have been a marketing tactic for as long as package goods have been sold in supermarkets. Most people probably can’t even imagine a Cracker Jack box without a prize inside.
Giveaways are not just for kids; adults have long participated in incentive giveaways ranging from a free tote with the purchase of makeup or perfume at a department store, two $500 gift cards with a new account at the local bank. All of these giveaways are designed to entice the consumer to try particular brands and services.
Recognizing the power of free offers to drive consumer purchases, NetFree Direct LLC, a leading Internet marketing company, has taken the concept to the next level. Through the company’s Web site, consumers can obtain a variety of rewards including mobile phones, flat-screen TVs, laptops, PlayStations and other game consoles, digital cameras, gift cards and more, simply by completing advertisers’ surveys and signing up for subscriptions and free trial offers.
The Web site is sponsored by well-known advertisers such as BMG, Blockbuster, Netflix, Discover Card, USA Today, Disney and hundreds of others. Upon registration, consumers are directed to a special area of the site where they can complete advertisers’ surveys and sign up for subscriptions or free trials and redeem their rewards. Trials or subscriptions can be canceled without obligation.… Read More
It’s been more than a decade since spammers and their enemies begun to evolve competitively. As with the classic cheetah/gazelle model originally formulated by Darwin, each time one group becomes a little faster or more agile, its adversaries develop traits for outwitting and outrunning it.
In addition to wasting people’s time with unwanted e-mail, spam also eats up a lot of network bandwidth. Consequently, there are many organizations, as well as individuals, who have taken it upon themselves to fight spam with a variety of techniques. But because the Internet is public, there is really little that can be done to prevent spam, just as it is impossible to prevent junk mail.
Nobody wants it or ever asks for it. No one ever eats it; it is the first item to be pushed to the side when eating the entree. Sometimes it is actually tasty, like 1% of junk mail that is really useful to some people.
One reliable indicator of the problem’s magnitude is the size of the anti-spam effort. The range of tools available to ISPs, enterprises and consumers in the fight against spam grew considerably during the Web bubble.
Simultaneously heavyweight Web marketers and interactive ad players have been scrambling to distinguish their services from the bad guys, as well as to counteract growing calls for government controls on digital marketing.
In one of the biggest such moves, the Direct Marketing Association (DMA), through its subsidiary, the Association of Interactive Marketing (AIM), has released online … Read More
Radiohead-Blazing A New Digital Trail
With the British art-rock band Radiohead releasing their new album entitled “In Rainbows” as a digital download and sold it for whatever their fans volunteered to pay, is this going to become a new trend in the methods that bands supply their music to the public?
With CD shipments to retailers down 13% from last year, this innovative way to eliminate the middleman, the record label has proved exactly where the music industry is headed. But there is a catch, the release is only available via the website (InRainbows.com) and cannot be purchased in retail stores. The band will also offer fans a deluxe-edition box set that includes vinyl and CD copies of the release, plus a CD of bonus tracks and a lyric book on December 3.
Will this technique catch on? One can only guess, but given the restraints that some record companies have on their artists, early reports suggest that most consumers are actually paying for the release. This release may have made the band more money than previous releases by eliminating the “manufacturing” costs of a CD, including promotion, marketing, distribution and the record label’s cut.
An interesting element to this is that the release is getting more “word of mouth” promotion and publicity than most albums. People are intrigued and are talking about it and large web sites (mostly corporate) are not discussing it mainly because the record company (or lack thereof) is not asking them that they do so.… Read More
Plastic Surgery – Do Not Believe the Hype
When is a beautiful model in a publication not really a beautiful model? When someone has played funny with the image!
You read magazines. I read magazines. We all read magazines. We all think the same thing: My God, there are some beautiful people in the world. Or are there?
Of course, there are incredibly beautiful people in the world. The user couple of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are just one example. Many of the photographs you see in magazines, however, are not exactly accurate. This is also true for the Internet.
The massive improvements in software over the last 10 years have led to some interesting developments. In this case, we are talking about digital editing software. Editing software is all about touching up photographs. Prior to the digital revolution, this meant images would get small changes to correct minor imperfections. In the digital age, it is fairly shocking models are actually employed any longer.
Using basic desktop programs such as Adobe Photoshop, one can mold a body into practically anything you want. Hair can be made longer, shorter or a different color. Noses can be made bigger, smaller, wider, darker or lighter. Prefer the model to look insanely thin? Just start pointing and clicking. The same goes for any part of the body. If a photograph does not have the correct lighting for a magazine cover, it can be corrected using software.
Is there anything wrong with this? Yes … Read More
How to Save Big Bucks in Purchasing High Quality Stock Photos.
Pictures and graphics are one of the most important elements that a company uses to create brand awareness and communicate its message. Ever wonder where those images come from? The general term for these images is “stock photos” and the evolution of digital photography has caused a revolution within the stock photo industry. In our business of selling trade show displays and designing graphics for these displays we are constantly challenged with how to develop a graphical message that is suitable for trade show graphics. Trade show graphics are considered large format printing and it has its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to finding high-resolution photos that when printed look presentable. Many of you have probably taken an old 35 mm picture and blown it up to a poster size graphic only to see the quality deteriorate that it only looks good when you’re fifteen feet away. Imagine taking that same picture and making it 7 feet tall by 10 feet wide. Yikes!
If you’re the likes of Nike or McDonalds, it’s no big deal to arrange professional photographers to take high resolution digital photos for any type of ad campaign, brochure or billboard. If you’re the average small business in America then you have a bit of a challenge finding images that won’t break the bank account. For most of our clients this is where the “Sticker Shock” of buying stock images comes into play.… Read More

The Truth About Why People Search!
Why do people search on search engines? Let’s confess this seems like a basic question, right? People search because they are looking for something. Complicating that question are these questions. For what are they looking? Why are they searching? What compels them to act?
Plus, how does all of this relate to Internet and pay-per-click marketing?
Let’s reason that searching can be broken down into two classifications: factual and emotional. Factual or informational searches occur as people look for general facts and information about a particular subject matter. Findings from this type of search may or may not cause the person searching to respond or act.
Here’s a fact or truth for you. Human needs and feelings drive emotional searches. When a person’s emotions are activated, an individual is more likely to respond to gathered information by taking action. So, where does this awareness lead us and how can we relate it to Internet and pay-per-click marketing?
People search for three reasons:
To gather facts or information — an informational search.
To satisfy a need or desire — an emotional search.
To solve a problem — an emotional search.
Did you catch those three reasons? You may not realize it, but these three reasons will be the keys to effective pay-per-click ad copy and ad click-through and conversion success.
Let’s now review a typical search process. Suppose you’re contemplating buying a personal digital assistant (PDA). First, you search the Internet for product selections. After … Read More

Keyword Writing and Niche Marketing
As a writer with a background in public relations and marketing, I’ve always wanted to focus my energies on one particular client and make them a great success. In 2004 & 2005, I got my wish. Elaine VonCannon, a REMAX Capital REALTOR in Williamsburg, Virginia, had attempted to enter the real estate profession and thrive in a market where the ‘old guard’ has a stronghold. Sidhe Communications internet marketing tactics helped launch her career as a REALTOR. And her sales and marketing skills helped turned the leads Sidhe Communications generated into solid sales.
Internet Marketing: SEO the Seed of Growth
In 2003, I worked for a Public Relations firm, Wasabi Publicity, in Saluda, North Carolina. It was here that I first learned of an organic SEO method through a woman who calls herself the Publicity Hound. She said the best method of website promotion was to write one article per month that educates readers on a product or service. The Publicity Hound also recommended a short list of article submission web sites where these articles could be posted. In January of 2003, I convinced Elaine VonCannon that I would help her write several articles and post them on sites across the internet. Elaine was in the first 6-8 months of working for REMAX Capital in Williamsburg and was using traditional marketing methods (print media, brochures) to promote her services. We dropped several articles between January and March and then she decided to stop, because of … Read More
Kindle Publishing – Why write an eBook and Publish on Kindle
While the technology of reading digital books is not new, the market for eBooks is recently headed towards a new direction: UP. The growth of the demand of eBooks has also threatened printed books, to the point that authors are wondering if printed books have a deadline or not. Regardless, authors have found some form of solace in Kindle’s program called Kindle Publishing, which allows authors to publish and sell their content on the Kindle network. Apart from eBooks, essays and digital copies of magazines and newspapers can also be found on the Kindle network.
So the question remains, why must you, as an author or Internet marketer or both, consider writing an eBook and publish it on Kindle?
1.) Generate income – Kindle Publishing allows you to sell your book or essay on their network. You get to earn 90% of the sale, while Kindle gets a 10% cut. The trick here is to entice your readers to buy your book. If you will visit their network, you will notice a slew of books that cost 99p, which barely makes a dent in one’s bank account. If you can produce X number of books within a set period of time and sell them, you’ll be earning passive income.
2.) Instant access – The burden of delivering or shipping out your books to retailers is removed when you publish on Kindle. The eBook or essay purchased is acquired almost … Read More

Start Viral Marketing Campaigns Using E-books
Viral Marketing sounds like something bad but it is actually something very good. It is, also, a powerful way to generate traffic to your website.
Think about how a virus spreads from one person to another. One person gets sick and just by sneezing they can give the virus to many more people… those people get sick and share their germs with everyone they know and the next thing anybody knows is that there is an epidemic. That is the very concept of viral marketing. The idea is to get everyone to spread your marketing message around because they want to.
Now let’s look at using an E-book to start your viral marketing campaign. First you create an E-book… a really good one that has links to your website, to your sales page and affiliate links to products and services that you recommend… and you give it to three people. In the book you encourage those three people to give it to their friends and family.
Before you know it the E-book is spreading across the Internet like wildfire. Digital information duplicates easily and quickly so before you know it, thousands of people could be reading our free E-book.
Make certain that you let people know that they have permission to forward the E-book around the Internet. When you create the E-book, you have the right to give people certain rights. One of those rights could be that you allow them to give the … Read More
Selling Electronic Information, the New Paradigm Shift
You can create a win-win proposition in which a buyer wants, and readily requests information from your web site, and happily pays you for it, all electronically, even while you sleep!
The information is digital, usually in the form of an electronic book (eBook). Once purchased, the transfer of the information to the customer is digital (via the internet) and immediate. And the transfer of the customer’s money to your bank account is also digital (via Paypal, Clickbank, and others) and immediate. The customer wins because he/she got the needed information, immediately. You win because your bank account grew, immediately.
You create the information and then you own it (it’s your asset). Or you can become an affiliate of someone else who owns the information and who has given you permission to promote and sell it. The production cost is mostly related to the amount of time spent at the keyboard creating the original digital product. Unlike hard, physical products like the ones you can hold in your hand (for example, a hard-bound book or a toaster), the cost to reproduce digital information is essentially zero. This is a great advantage in that identical copies of the product can be sold over and over again (your inventory is virtually unlimited) with very little expense in both production and transportation of the information. Even marketing and promotion can be done over the internet, requiring very little continued overhead and expense.

Expand Your Horizons – Sell Your Professional Services Through ClickBank
ClickBank allows its merchants to sell many different types of digital products, but with the proviso that they must be deliverable entirely over the internet within 24 hours of purchase.
Most merchants focus on downloadable products (especially books and software applications), although ClickBank can equally be used to sell digital content delivered by email or via membership websites and other online communities. But there is one category not usually associated with ClickBank – services.
In theory, the need to deliver within ClickBank’s stipulated 24-hour time frame excludes the sale of services. It is almost impossible to absolutely guarantee delivery of a service within a specific timeframe, as fulfillment invariably involves activity on the part of the merchant and may be affected by workload and other variable factors. With some services, implementation naturally takes place over an extended period (often scheduled to suit the buyer), making it even more difficult to comply.
Fortunately, ClickBank’s interpretation of the 24-hour rule is somewhat liberal. A number of successful ClickBank merchants operate service-based businesses where fulfillment takes a month or more to complete. In these cases, delivery is deemed to have taken place when the merchant makes first contact with the buyer. This flexibility allows the sale of a very broad range of digital services:
Writing services (ghostwriting, resume writing, translation, proof reading, editing etc)
Artistic services (web design, graphic design, custom art, book cover art etc)
Professional services (consulting, project planning, legal, accountancy … Read More
New Sites Help Indie Musicians Find Audiences on the Web
It wasn’t all that long ago that musicians and bands had to pound the pavement with their biographies and demos in hand, trying to get the ear of a music industry scout. If they lucked out, the band would sign a recording contract and – hopefully – get the promotional power of the record label to find an audience. Indie musicians have always been a breed apart, sometimes because they have chosen to create their music outside of the mainstream and other times because they have not had access to the movers and shakers in the music world.
Today, of course, indie musicians have a much more direct link with their potential audiences: the Internet. In order to succeed, they’re no longer dependent entirely on word-of-mouth and the patronage of like-minded people. Instead, they can easily reach those who want to buy indie bands’ music. They do, of course, have to record their music, but technology has leveled the playing field there as well. Today’s digital music software allows indie musicians to record their music inexpensively, without the backing of major labels.
Many indie musicians have used social networking as one aspect of their Internet marketing efforts. Most bands, for example, have MySpace or Facebook pages. Those who have created videos might also place them on YouTube. This kind of viral marketing is completely aligned with the traditional, word-of-mouth promotion that indie bands have used for decades.

Sponsorship is no exception when it comes to progressive changes in marketing. From the simplest living out of financial support to digital and web advertising, the use of sponsorship as a marketing tool has spanned through the changing times.
A history of sponsorship is presented below, based on eras of different applications of marketing and advertising tactics.
Eras of sponsorship styles
Arts Patronage in 1600
The earliest form of sponsorship was seen in the support given to actors in the 1600s wherein the arts, particularly the theater, were the avenue for sponsorship. During this era, to be sponsored meant that the upper crust of society maintained the funding of the plays.
This is very prominent in the European places, where the aristocratic society, such as the Queen, favored chosen plays and offered their approval as support. Such support gave a ‘go signal’ for other people to patronize the play and further help theater groups through funding the writers involved and the needed props that were to be used in the acts.
The beginning of advertising in 1631
Within the same decade, advertising through sponsorship had begun. The main benefit that sponsorship offered was exposure to the public. This benefit helped form the basis of exposing services and/or products in modern-day advertising.

Why Radio Won’t Play Indie Music
One Reason Why Radio Won’t Play Indie Music
And What You Can Do About It
by Jeronimo Black
As I clicked on a popular music business forum, I was greeted with a question. “Why won’t commercial radio play music by Indie Artists?”
My reply to this person was as follows:
“As a former Operations Manager and Music Director of both the Comm and Non-Comm sides, Let me break the reason down for you.
Commercial Radio needs ratings to get paid from advertisers. Most advertiser’s, on radio, are ad agencies. Ad agencies base their “buys” (sponsorships) on a Cost per point (“CPP”) bases. CPP is based on how many thousands of listeners a radio station can capture in a 15-minute period (or came).
Many commercial radio [Program and Music] don’t want to put their ratings at risk, by airing an ‘untested song’ on the air. So what these commercial radio directors do, is, ere music based on the national charts provided by Radio and Records, Broadcast Data Systems (BDS) and Billboard.
These charts are mainly influenced by the major labels via promotions and strategic alliances.
Your best best is to do like Charles Barkley. Charles Barkleys’ single “Crazy” went #1 on the internet and radio couldn’t help but to get them the single on the air.
Get your music on music submission sites, make some noise on the net, and get a CDBaby.com account so you can get your music on iTunes and start promoting.”… Read More
